Ang Pambansang T-shirt

The National T-Shirt

Now these are tourist shirts I wouldn't mind wearing.

Out with the tacky "My xxx went to xxx and all I got was this lousy shirt" shirts!

51 Ways to Cut Vacation Costs

Here's a great article for all of us budget travelers (or independent travelers; whatever floats your boat): 51 Ways to Cut Vacation Costs from National Geographic Traveler.

I find myself agreeing with most of the list, but this one comes as a surprise:

2. Trash your "cookies," small files (stored in your Internet browser) that record the websites you surf—and the transactions you make. Say you go online and purchase a $200 plane ticket from Chicago to Omaha. The next time you visit that site, you could be quoted a higher rate than what's actually available because of your spending history. Avoid this problem by deleting these files each time you log on; detailed instructions can be found under the "Help" option in your browser menu.

Well I'll be darned.

It's a box of Baygon!

This post is way overdue and basically unecessary since I've posted pictures in Flickr last week.

Aaaaaaaanyway, as a formality, here's what was underneath that wrapping:

A box of Baygon!
It's a box of Baygon!

I think I'll stop buying Pinkies for now. Haha, that was such a quick obsession. It's not that I don't like them anymore, but it distracted me from other things I should be spending my money on, like saving up for a new camera, future trips and more clothes.

Though I *really* must get a hold of a Standing Yukata Pinky. They're wearing thongs! Well, a geta, but it's close enough to a flip-flop!

There's no announcement in their website yet, so I was having doubts whether it's true (though the poster claims he received the announcement via e-mail & sms from Cebu Pacific).

In another forum, I found out that it is true.

Are you ready to jump?

I haven’t got much time to waste, it’s time to make my way
I’m not afraid of what I’ll face, but I’m afraid to stay
I’m going down my own road and I can make it alone
I'll work and I'll fight, Till I find a place of my own

Are you ready to jump?
Get ready to jump
Don’t ever look back, oh baby,
Yes, I’m ready to jump
Just take my hands
Get ready to jump

Hostelling it at Hostel Thailand

Four bed dormIf there's one word to describe Hostel Thailand, it's "narrow."

The second word would be "tall" (the building), the third would be "clean," and the fourth would be "friendly."

How happy are you?

Happy Planet Index
Your personal Happy Planet Index (HPI) is 65.6, which is similar to that of Costa Rica. This is above the world average of 46, but well below the target value of 83, so you can still do more to improve your health and well-being, or reduce your environmental impact. Your score is above that of your country, 59.2.

Below is a breakdown of the various components that make up your HPI score.
You: 65.6
Average: 42.4

Up and down

The fog is lifting. Soon you'll see what you need to do more clearly than ever.

Good to know. I'm starting with the 'nothing-else-to-do-but-die" scenarios.

When you reach rock bottom, there's nowhere else to go but up. But when you reach the summit, where else will you go but down?

They don't want my money

I wanted to open my own US Dollar savings account, so my co-worker can just transfer my salary through the online facility, but noooooooooo. The bank says I can't open an account.

First time I went to the bank, I was told I had to have an account holder in that branch. Fine. I went to the branch where my account was, and I was told I have to be an account holder for more than six months. As it turns out, I only opened my account last February, which meant that I have to wait until September.

Why don't they want my money?!

Stalked by a raincloud

In the days before my departure, it started raining. I have nothing against rain; it brings down the temperature and it can even cancel classes. However, I'm no longer in school and rain and travel don't really go well together.

On the morning of the 17th of May, the sun was out and it was bright and sunny. Thank God, I thought, I just hope it holds out until I reach Thailand. The weather was good, even when the plane has took off from Singapore. I looked outside the window, marvelling how much light there is still out, even though it's already past 7:30 in the evening.

While we were over northern Malaysia though, crossing into southern Thailand, the sky darkened. There was lightning in the distance, and I heard a faint rumbling of thunder. Next, of course, was rain.

The airport bus was right outside the airport exit, so I didn't have to worry about wandering lost in the rain. Well, not until I had to get off the bus to look for my hostel.

There I was, standing in the rain in the Silom sidewalk without an umbrella and a big and heavy pack on my back. And wondering where the hell to go. I look up and saw the skytrain. Thanks to my geekiness, the countless hours I spent reading travelouges, guides and maps finally pays off: I knew where to go. Or at least which way to walk to hopefully stumble upon the Hostel Thailand.

It was dark, it was raining, I haven't had much sleep in the past 32 hours. I was cranky, tired and irritated. How much further to the hostel?

And so begins (or end) my first night in Bangkok.

Shuttle service to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (Clark)

I noticed that people are stumbling upon my blog while searching for information regarding the shuttle going to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark, Pampanga. Though I have never been to the Clark Airport nor rode the shuttle, I have read about them when I was considering taking Tiger Airways to Singapore.

Doggy encounters

Squatter dog.

See this dog? While I was walking along the shores of Thong Nai Pan Noi, this dog kept on barking at me. I walked along, ignoring him and hoping he won't come near to take a bite. He didn't and he eventually stopped.

I am victolius!

The joy of life is made up of obscure and seemingly mundane victories that give us our own small satisfactions.

-- Billy Joel

It's small victories like this that makes me happy.

Pink Life

Boulevard of broken dreamsWhat has Nina been up to? You'd probably think that I was too busy and swamped with work and life to update. That's true: I was too busy NOT doing anything and wallowing in misery with my not-so-good-friend, PMS.

...It was one of those weeks where I sleep too much and do nothing all day (and night). There were even a couple of days when I didn't go out of the house at all. Bad. Then again, I didn't have any money, so I couldn't go out.

Still, I have my credit card and no amount of promises made to myself could stop me from using it, both online and off. Two of those online purchases were dolls. Yup. DOLLS. Or figurine, if you prefer.

When Tigers fly

When Tigers fly

I never really considered Tiger Airways, even when I'm trying to be cheap with my budget. That is primarily because flying via Tiger in the Philippines meant having to go to Clark. Even with the shuttle service from Megamall, I still see it as a hassle, particularly since I live in the northern part of Metro Manila.

However, when my sister-in-law told me about the special promotion Tiger Airways was having, I immediately changed my opinion. Well, it was actually because it's for the Thailand leg of the trip.

That was in the middle of January, their SG$9.98 promo. Similar to Cebu Pacific's Php 10 and Piso fares, the base rate for a one-way ticket is SG$9.98 (depending on the destination) plus applicable taxes. For my roundtrip ticket to Bangkok originating from Singapore, it came down to SG$103.21 or Php3,320.00.
